| Spare the rod, spoil the child?
By Allah’s grace my wife and I have two young children. Like all parents, we are faced with the choice of whether or not to spank our children when they misbehave. I won’t say spanking is completely wrong or completely right, but if you start you have to be extremely careful because once you go down that road it becomes a very slippery slope. You have to be real careful if you spank your child because it can easily be mingled with feelings of revenge rather than training. I’m not saying that in rare or extreme circumstances that physical disciple isn’t in order. But I’ve found that by using alternative means I can achieve the same results without spanking- by changing my tone, looking at them at eye level, holding them gently but intently, or make them stand alone by a corner. The same feeling of remorse was created without hitting the child. Those conservative measures created shame and tears of regret for their behavior without permanent negative memories.
