2nd Musleh Maud Tournament Flag Football, Basketball, Cricket Silicon Valley, California November 10-11, 2007- The 2nd Annual Musleh Maud Tournament was hosted by Silicon Valley Majlis, which consisted of flag football, basketball, and cricket. We had roughly 90 total participants. The Los Angeles Majalis brought approximately 40 participants. Phoenix Majlis brought approximately 10 participants (traveling over 700 miles). Silicon Valley Majlis brought approximately 15 participants. Bay Point/Oakland Majalis brought approximately 15 participants. Philadelphia/New York Majalis brought 8 participants (traveling over 3,000 miles). The opening session, which included Tilawat and the Khuddam Pledge, was held at the facility at 9:00 am. Shortly afterwards, the flag football tournament began. Each team in this tournament played at least three games before being eliminated. Competition on the field was very healthy and at times extremely exciting, especially the game between Los Angeles A team and Los Angeles B team, which went to triple overtime and ended in a 6-5 win for Los Angeles A. Baypoint took first place, while Los Angeles A took second place. After football, Lunch was served and Salat was offered on the field. Praying on the field further contributed to the homey atmosphere that most MKA events encompass. At about 4:00 pm, Cricket began at a nearby elementary school. Silicon valley clearly dominated all competition while both batting and bowling. Afterwards, everyone proceeded to Baitul Baseer Mosque for Maghrib/ Isha prayers, followed by a very effective and beneficial health session. In this session, each Athlete's percent body fat, body water level, blood pressure, height, and weight was measured. Based on these factors, each participant was given one-on-one advice by an experienced health specialist on how to become healthier or how to continue remaining fit. Following this session was dinner at roughly 8:00 pm. The next morning began with Fajr Prayers at Baitul Baseer at 5:30 am, after which breakfast was held at 6:30 am. Cricket finals began shortly thereafter. Silicon valley cruised over its competition, but the combined team of Phoenex/LA West won a close and exciting match against LA East by one run. After cricket, the participants of the tournament proceeded to a close by basketball gymnasium. Many were impressed by the cleaniness and general appeal of this facility. LA East B ended up getting 1st place by beating Philadelphia (a majlis that traveled over 3000 miles to attend) in the final game. Afterwards, all the exhausted participants headed to the Mosque for the closing session. The closing session was combined with that of a Waq-fe-nau Ijtema: this was the first time the closing sessions of two such events have been combined. Local Missionary Malhi Sahib, Hafiz Sami-ulla Sahib, and Naib Sadr Muhammed Chaudhry Sahib were all present at this event. Overall, most deem the 2nd Annual Musleh Maud Tournament a great success. Although it was a draining two days of non-stop action, many enjoyed all of the healthy competition, bonding, and the highly informative health session that this event encompassed. Mohtamim and Naib Mohtamim Health and Fitness Kashif Chaudhry and Khurram Shah did an astounding job of organizing this significant event. One major improvement this year that many participants are looking forward to is the addition of statistics that were kept for both basketball and football (they will be uploaded onto www.mkausa.org shortly).Written by Saad Karamat |
