Milk and Cookies

                                                   Milk and Cookies

Milk and cookies.  These two things, for this twenty-two year old Khadim, represent the carefree days.  The days of Mister Rogers and Sesame Street, days where school was only half a day and half of that half day was nap time.  As I sped along at the speed of life, that feeling became distant from me.  Now, imagine my surprise when I unexpectedly saw milk and cookies at last year's Ijtema.  I had a plan of brushing my teeth and going to bed but when I saw those cookies, my brain went numb as nostalgia and flashbacks flooded my mind.

This was not just milk and cookies, the snack had to be seen in context with the occasion.  Atfal surrounded the tables, as expected.  But Khuddam made their mark as well.  Khuddam studying to succeed in something, scientists, computer engineers, lawyers, athletes, and everything in between stood around everywhere, milk in one hand and cookies in the other, just talking and laughing and having a most joyous time.  I met up with my best friends and we laughed and snacked until our eyelids and stomachs became heavy and sleep called us to her slumber.  Yes, it was a simple thing.  But it meant so much more to this guy.  Who knows, maybe you and I will get to have some milk and cookies together at this Ijtema, inshallah.  I know I'm quite ready for another adventure. . .are you?
