People are often surprised to hear that Jesus is a highly esteemed figure in Islam. My friend once asked, "Is this a new idea within Islam?" thinking that perhaps Muslims recently concocted this notion. In reality, Jesus is mentioned more times in the Quran, by name, than Prophet Muhammad himself -- each time in the most elevated regard.
This holiday season, in light of recent polarizing events such as "Burn a Quran Day" and the failed Portland Christmas bombing, I hope Muslims and Christians can come together to reflect on Jesus' statement, "(God) has enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving as long as I live ... made me dutiful to my mother, has not made me haughty" (Quran 19:32-33).
Muslims and Christians: Let us unite in giving alms, caring for our parents, and ridding ourselves of arrogance.
