AS A Muslim, I’m saddened by pastor Terry Jones’s regrettable decision to seek publicity by planning to burn the Koran. Because Muslims believe in all the revealed books of God, including the Torah and the New Testament, we can’t even imagine taking such a step.
There are two important principles from the Koran that Muslims and non-Muslims alike should recall in dealing with this situation. First, God commands His servants that when the ignorant address them, they should say, “Peace,’’ and move on with dignity. Second, God reminds Muslims that they should not revile other gods lest they, out of ignorance, revile Allah.
No matter what happens today, the anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, or when the next “pastor Jones’’ decides to seek publicity, Muslims should keep these teachings in mind and behave with dignity.
