(03/30/07, Letter to the Editor, printed in Wall Street Journal )![]() Playboy in Indonesia By Ronald D. Hubbs Jr. Chino, California Dear Editor I was astounded at the juvenile commentary on this subject by your fine newspaper. Here is my response: Mr. Sadanand Dhume's 'Playboy in Indonesia' is the latest example of what appears to be an almost universal journalistic trend to muddy the water instead of inform the reader. The author ridiculously wraps himself in the 'noble cause' of freedom for smut peddlers as one against terrorism. Mr. Dhume states, "the affair captures...the Muslim country's steady slide toward intolerance", but the slippery slope he fails to mention is the one of pornography. Here in the U.S., indecency used to be considered a woman pictured in her under garments; now hardcore porn is a widespread multi-billion dollar publicly traded business. Child porn, internet predation, STDs and sexual assaults are now endemic. While I am no proponent of the fanatical tactics of Jemaat Islamiyah (I am an Ahmadi Muslim whom they brutally persecute), the overall opposition to pornographic license is a justified one. |
