(03/30/07, Wall Street Journal) Playboy in Indonesia By Sardar Anees Ahmad Waterloo, New York Reading the account of intolerance and bigotry regarding the publication of the Playboy Magazine in Indonesia evoked a great sense of agitation within me. And I am not referring solely to the actions of the violent prone, blood-thirsty extremists. I found the suggestions of author Mr. Sadanand Dhume on combating the problem in Indonesia to be equally troubling. Yes, I agree that compulsion in religious matters only breed's trouble. Yes, I agree that Muslims exist who are ever-ready to export their culture onto non-complying populations, but cringe at the very thought of being subject to the same principle. But while more liberal components of the Western way of life do indeed threaten the social fabric of many Muslim societies, they are no less harmful to any other society, including the West itself. The authors' suggestion that a steady dosage of vulgarity and disregard for the Muslim sentiment will usher in a new era of modernity in Muslim populaces is utterly absurd. Intolerance is not a disease that can be cured by its like. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (Ahmadiyyat), who the author rightly acknowledged as a persecuted faction of Islam, offers a sound and promising alternative to the current dilemma. Since its inception in the late 1800s, Ahmadiyyat has maintained an absolutely pristine international pubic relations resume while also staunchly opposing indecency. And this combination of peace and discouragement of lewdness is not peculiar to Ahmadiyyat alone. There are scores of organizations, religious and secular, who also promote peace while condemning obscene behavior. Karl Marx once said, "Force is the midwife of every old society pregnant with a new one." Sadly, it is apparent that both factions, the extremists and modernists, are aiding in the realization of Marx's words. It is intolerance and lack of understanding on the part of both parties, which has caused and is feeding the current uproar. Implementing the model exemplified by communities such as Ahmadiyyat is the only method to combating the ever-apparent clash of civilizations between the so-called "modern" world and Muslims. |
