(12/07/07, New York Times) Islam's Silent Moderates By Zahid Mian
The actions of the so-called Muslims referred to in Ms. Ali's articles misinterpret true Islamic values. The particular verse referenced by Ms. Ali acts as a deterrent against letting one's guard down in a state of passion. Where is our compassion when we sentence people in the West to death? Where is our compassion when we “shock and awe” an innocent nation? Where is our compassion when we sentence petty criminals to harsh sentences? If adultery can be proved, then the punishment must be carried out for deterrent purposes. How many husbands murder their wives or secret lovers because of infidelity? How many children are victimized by these acts? What does it do to the self-esteem of children when one of their parents is found to have been guilty of infidelity or murder? What about compassion for these victims?
