Profile Mohi Chander PDF Print E-mail
Brother Mohi Chandar of Chicago-East majlis was born in 1977 to a Hindu family in Hissar, a city in the state of Haryana, India . Mohi literally means the one who attracts. He was six when his parents decided to move to the United States and since then he has lived most of his life in and around Chicago . He is younger of the two brothers and all of his immediate family lives in Chicago .

He graduated from Niles North High school in Skokie, Illinois and then went on to college at Northeastern University . During his college years he worked in different private and public laboratories, which made him realize that he needed something more challenging as a profession. After finishing his core course work in Biology he decided to complete a teacher certification and graduated with a Bachelors degree in 2003. Currently he holds a teaching position at a High School in Franklin Park, a community north west of Chicago . He is also pursuing a Masters in Biology at Northeastern.

His first introduction to Islam-Ahmadiyyat was through a Sunni Muslim friend who mentioned it in an occasional conversation. “I grew up with Sunni and Shia friends” explained Br. Mohi in a recent interview with the MKA NauMobaeen team, “and one day one of them mentioned that there is another group called Ahmadi”. At the time he thought Muslims belonged to either Shia or Sunni school of thought. “I was curious about [Ahmadiyyat] and learned more from the Internet, [a] great resource when used for good” said Br. Mohi. The very same friend told him about the historical Sadiq Mosque in Chicago . At the time he was living not to far from the mosque so he decided to look them up and called. Respected Abdul Karim Sahib, President of the Chicago-East jamaat told him about the open house held at Sadiq mosque every Friday night and he decided to show up.

After many visits to the mosque and discussions with the members, he decided to join the blessed community in January of 2006. When asked about the reasons that compelled him to join Ahmadiyyat, Br. Mohi replied “There were many reasons why I accepted Ahmadiyyat and one of the reasons was the feeling of belonging, the feeling that I was in the right place.” He went on to say that “About two years ago, I kept all of the fasts for Ramadan, and it was during that time that I really felt that this was where I belonged."

Since he joined, he has been an active member of Chicago-East majlis and now holds the important office of General Secretary of the jammat. Questioned about the changes he has felt in himself since he converted, Br. Mohi humbly replied “I think I am a bit more spiritual and I am calmer”.  Regarding his family’s reaction to his conversion, he said “My family is not accepting and are very opposed to it, however I find that my cousins are more open and accepting then their or my parents.” May Allah bless him for all the sacrifices he and other new converts make when joining the folds of Ahmadiyyat.

In his high school he coached wrestling for two years before his commitment to pursue a graduate degree did not let him continue. Though, Basketball had always been his true sport, “When I was in high school, I used to play basketball all summer, every summer” said Br. Mohi. After he joined the teaching profession, he enjoyed playing Basketball with his co-workers but one unfortunate day, he had a knee injury. The injury required surgery and now he enjoys watching the game.

Br. Mohi likes food from all cultures and according to his friends he is a great cook. When asked about his favorite, he said “Being a man of my size, I rarely discriminate against food.”

Another member of Chicago-east majlis who has known Br. Mohi since he started coming to Sadiq Mosque had these wonderful things to say about him;

“Brother Mohi is a wonderful human being with a sharp mind and a loving heart. He is extremely articulate, intelligent, and yet humble. His students are really fortunate to have a man of his qualities as their mentor. Even though he has been in the jamaat for a relatively short while, he already commands great respect in the local jamaat where he currently serves as General Secretary. He is an exemplary amila member: ALWAYS on time, extremely well-organized, and on top of all his responsibilities. Chicago East is blessed to have such a beautiful soul join its membership.

Brother Mohi is also a wonderful cook! And he is extremely generous with his cooking. He often brings home-cooked dishes and desserts to the mosque to share with his friends. His generosity is striking. I once mentioned the need for a video camera for a jamaat related event. Brother Mohi delivered the camera to me the very next week! I kept his camera for a while, but he never complained. He is the sort of person one is naturally inclined to pray for. May Allah continue to shower his blessing on Br. Mohi, and grant him success and happiness in all walks of life.”
