MKA Detroit Adopt-A-Family Drive
MKA Detroit adopted 12 needy families around Detroit
On Christmas Eve, khuddam set out to the streets of Detroit to personally help 12 deserving families to have a Merry Christmas. These 12 families were chosen by Volunteers of America for their Adopt-a-Family program. Many of these families were single mothers or families that had no source of income. Many of these families could not afford to provide their children with a proper Christmas let alone the basic necessities. This would be the equivalent of a Muslim family that could not afford to participate in Eid. How grateful would you be if in your time of need, a stranger offered their hard earned money to help you celebrate your religion? An example of this form of kindness to other religions from the Holy Prophet’s (saw) life can be seen in the pact of Najran. With regard to repairs of Churches, etc., the pact maintained that if Christians sought financial help and moral support from the Muslims, they should help them as it was a preferred option. It would neither be deemed a loan nor a favor but would be a means to enhance the pact in that it would improve social connections and spirit of mutual help.
Therefore, MKA set out asking khuddam to adopt a family for $100 or donate as much as they can. Alhamdolillah, in a matter of minutes, over $1200 was pledged to this noble cause. With the lead of Nazim Khidmat-e-Khalq, Br. Armaghan Arshad, Volunteers of America was contacted to adopt 12 families. 12 $100 Meijer gift cards were purchased and the three khuddam headed to the city of Detroit. After an introduction of themselves and the jammat, the khuddam mentioned to each family that it was their duty as Muslims to help society and spread their message of peace and wanted to help a fellow human being and their family to have a Merry Christmas. An envelope was then handed to the family with the gift card along with a flyer with an introduction to the jammat and a Muslim for Peace flyer. The families were overjoyed and ever so grateful and thanked the jammat for our help and kindness. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) said, "If you love the poor and bring them near you. . . Allah will bring you near Him on the Day of Resurrection."
