This past Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-27, 2007), the Khuddam and Atfal of the West Coast held the 21st Annual Ijtema at Baitul Baseer Mosque in Milpitas, California.  Khuddam and Atfal from Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, San Jose, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Diego, Tuscon, and Los Angeles journeyed several hundreds of miles to participate in a weekend of spiritual development.  Roughly 150 youth were able to attend the event.

First-day events kicked off with a special opening session presided by the Sadr Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya USA, Dr. Faheem Younus Qureshi, who traveled with his 40-person Amila from the East Coast.  This was followed by a team soccer and volleyball tournament and individual and relay track races.  The afternoon session saw Taleem competitions, including poetry and impromptu speeches.  In an effort to foster the spirit of social services and sacrifice among the Khuddam, an on-site blood mobile was arranged.  Participants donated over 30 pints of blood during the weekend.

Following prayers, Imam Shamshad Sahib, Regional Imam of the Southwest Region, conducted a 45-minute Question and Answer session, with topics ranging from peer pressure to the proper etiquette in reciting prayers.  In the evening, Taleem competitions continued with a Jeopardy-style three-person group trivia competition that pitted a dozen teams against each other, attempting to answer questions on subjects ranging from sports and the secular to mosques and the spiritual.

Sunday morning events began before dawn with prayers, followed by a competitive softball tournament held at a local park. The closing session was presided by Dr. Hameed-ur-Rahman, our respected Naib Ameer of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, USA, who emphasized the importance of brotherhood and civic engagement. The Ijtema concluded with silent prayers and packed lunches prepared by the local organizers for travelers.

Nearly every youth in attendance left with a multi-colored ribbon medal, and a strong camaraderie was established between members of the various youth chapters, making the Ijtema a very refreshing and memorable experience.  The event was indeed historic as it marked the first time ever that the National MKA Amila convened in the West Coast.
