How do I make a video?

You'll need to have a device that can capture digital movies—this could be a camcorder, digital camera, or even your cell phone! You copy the movies to you computer, and then you can either upload them as-is or edit them with software such as iMovie or Windows MovieMaker to add titles and special effects.

4 Steps to making a video:

Step 1:

Plan The most neglected, yet most important, step in preparing a video is planning.

1. Create a Team: Find a few volunteers (2-3) and assign them specific tasks. One member would be in charge of writing the script, another should become an expert in recording and another in charge of editing.

2. Create a Script: Prior to recording, sit with the team and do some brainstorming. Have an idea of what you need to record and what the end product should look like.

Step 2:

Record After doing some planning, you are ready to start recording. The recording phase is the most exciting, yet can be very frustrating.

1. Test recording: Prior to starting your ‘official’ recording make sure the cameraman has familiarized himself with his equipment. It is extremely important to do a test recording. The test recording can be a short five minute recording. It should be played back on your TV to ensure the lighting and audio settings are correct.

2. Audio problems: There is nothing more frustrating than having done all the recording only to find the audio is barely audible. Some recommendations include:
a. Handheld microphone: Attach a handheld microphone to your camera and have the presenter use the microphone to capture audio.

b. Wireless microphone: Invest in a wireless microphone with connects to your camera.

c. Post-recording narrations: Record the audio separate from the video. Move computers come with built in voice recording software which can be used to record your narration. Then combine the video with the audio during the editing phase.

Step 3:

Edit Editing can the most time consuming part of the video production process. Editing entails downloading the video to your computer and using software to fine-tune your recording.

1. Editing Software: There are numerous software packages to choose from when editing your video. These packages can get sophisticated and expensive. Most computer come with video editing software (i.e. Windows Movie Maker). As a rule of thumb, beginner should stick with free/inexpensive editors. They are relatively easier to learn and provide rich functionality.

Step 4:

Broadcast While most of you will make videos with the hopes of having them aired on MTA (Muslim Television Ahmadiyya). MTA does not have to be the ‘be all\end all’ for video distribution. There are other avenues of showcasing video productions done by various majlises.

1. mkausa.org: Videos can be posted on mkausa.org. Links to the video can be distributed to all USA Khaddam\Atfal via email or the online version of the Mujahid newsletter.

2. MTA Channel 1: Videos can relatively easily be broadcast to all Ahmadi homes in North America via MTA’s information channel (channel 1).

3. MTA International: Videos can be broadcast to the entire world via MTA International.

Equipment Requirements:
1. Hand-held camcorder capable of recording on MiniDV tapes

2. Tripod for camera

3. Optional handheld microphone

4. Computer/Editing Software
