Athenahealth Multiple
Software Job Openings
Athenahealth is growing at a meteoric rate, and we're aggressively hiring at
all levels. Our goal is to bring order to the chaos of U.S. healthcare, in
which hundreds of thousands of medical practices navigate a Byzantine set of
clinical and business processes wrought by decades of managed care. We do this
by offering a software-as-service solution that embeds insurance rules and
clinical processes directly into our practice management & electronic
medical platform. In essence, we are building an operating system for the
medical office that abstracts away administrative complexity, leaving doctors
free to practice medicine.
The development team here
is among the best you'd find at any company in the world. The working
environment is friendly and open. The folks that you will be working with are
top-notch, and will probably be some of the best and brightest folks you've
ever worked with regardless of where you're coming from-folks who would
otherwise work at Google, Oracle, hedge funds, or startups, but have decided to
come here because they want to help change healthcare at a fundamental level
and believe that we honestly have a shot.
In terms of the
technology platform-- you'll likely be working on Linux with Oracle,
perl/modperl, and Apache, with plenty of Web 2.0 techniques thrown into the
mix. But that's not why you'd be coming here; we believe any hacker worth
his/her salt can pick this stuff up in a matter of a couple of months. We're
more interested in folks with raw talent and a burning desire to succeed. The
types of problems you might work on are wide-ranging-from core performance
tuning to optimizing paper-based processes using OCR to writing AJAX widgets in
complicated (yet simple!) user interfaces.
We're aggressively
growing at all levels. Compensation is competitive, and as long as you get
stuff done, we're flexible about work schedules. If you'd like to apply, shoot
over a resume. The only real technical requirement for applying is being able
to make a computer do what you want it to do.
We have several
Development job openings at all levels, from entry-level to management. Apply
here to be considered for all appropriate roles.

About the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation
The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation was established in 1966 by Ewing Kauffman,
founder of Marion Laboratories (now Aventis Pharmaceuticals) and original owner
of the Kansas City Royals Baseball Club. Based in Kansas City, Missouri,
the Kauffman Foundation is a private, nonpartisan foundation that works with
partners to encourage entrepreneurship across America and to improve the
education of children and youth. With over $1 billion in assets, the
Kauffman Foundation is one of the twenty-five largest foundations in the United
States.
The Kauffman Foundation
promotes entrepreneurial success at all levels. It works with leading
educators and researchers nationwide to create awareness of the powerful
economic impact of entrepreneurship, to develop and disseminate proven programs
that enhance entrepreneurial skills and abilities, and to improve the
environment in which entrepreneurs start and grow businesses. The Foundation's
entrepreneurship work is nationwide; its impact, global.
In education, the
Kauffman Foundation has supported education initiatives for twenty
years-programs that spanned from drug/alcohol and dropout prevention to early
education programs and large-scale school reform initiatives. Today, we
have set in motion a new emphasis on math and science as the cornerstone of our
education agenda. We believe a strong emphasis on math and science
education is the critical next step for our nation's future.
We understand that the
strength of our economy is driven by advancement in science and technology, and
the ripple effect for society from such innovations are enormous-from
revolutionary products that benefit the way we live, to the spawning of new
companies, and even to the birth of new markets that create jobs and improve
living standards.
During the summer of
2009, Kauffman Foundation internships will be awarded in the following
disciplines:
ADVANCING INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Innovators are the lifeblood of entrepreneurship, yet many innovations languish
in university labs or get bogged down by the long development and marketing
process. The Kauffman Foundation has begun working with several
universities and other organizations to more fully understand the complexities
of this issue and to develop practical solutions to help bring many more
innovations to market.
Candidate qualifications: We are seeking students in various engineering
fields with experience and interest in bringing technologies to the
marketplace. Students familiar with technology transfer or
commercialization of new innovations should apply for this internship.
In addition to traditional summer internships, this department also
offers non-seasonal opportunities for students interested in externship,
fellowship or other academic exchange. If you desire to explore this type
of opportunity, please write a letter expressing your interest and transmit
your credentials at any time during the year.
COMMUNICATIONS
The Communications group supports the Foundation's programs by planning and
developing internal and external communications, including production of
collateral, advertising, video, news releases, web site content, media
relationships, publishing and publicizing research studies and supporting the
Foundation's presence at meetings and conferences.
Candidate qualifications: We seek an intern with an undergraduate or
graduate status who is majoring in journalism, public relations, mass
communications or related disciplines. Strong consideration will be given
to candidates with existing experience with new media communications and venues
such as blogs.
EDUCATION
We focus our K-12 educational programming on promoting research and policies
that grow innovative, sustainable enterprises and improve the academic
achievement of children in the areas of mathematics, engineering, technology
and science (METS) education. We emphasize the manner in which new
technologies and innovative ideas can transform learning environments.
This includes the use of 3-D immersive environments and mobile learning devices
such as cell phones and iPods.
Candidate qualifications: Qualified interns will be an undergraduate or
graduate student with a focus in public policy, public administration,
educational research, or a college student majoring in a METS related
discipline.
INVESTMENTS
The Foundation's Investments team supports the Foundation's goals by managing a
globally diversified, multi-billion dollar portfolio allocated among
world-class investment firms.
Candidate qualifications: This team seeks an intern with an undergraduate
or graduate student status, with a focus in business administration, economics,
finance, mathematics, statistics, informatics, physics, engineering or related
quantitative field. We will place an emphasis on candidates with
demonstrated statistical and quantitative analysis skills. Students with
experience using the Matlab Financial Toolbox are preferred.
LEGAL
The Legal group directs and implements all legal aspects of the Foundation's
operations. The group provides advice and counsel with a focus on
compliance with nonprofit tax laws and regulations. There is also much
focus on intellectual property matters, investments, governance and
employment. The legal team also participates in the agreements process
and is involved with resolving grantmaking issues.
Candidate qualifications: We seek an intern who has completed his or her
first year of law school at a top ranked program.
MINORITY ENTREPRENEURSHIP
The Minority Entrepreneurship team helps strengthen the infrastructures and
networks that help minority entrepreneurs be successful. The Urban
Entrepreneur Partnership, a one-stop economic empowerment center for minority
and urban business owners, is one of several initiatives the Minority
Entrepreneurship team has developed.
Candidate qualifications: We are seeking an intern who is studying public
affairs, public administration, domestic policy, urban policy or a similar
field of study.
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
In addition to guiding the Foundation and its culture, the Office of the
President seeks to articulate the role of entrepreneurship in fostering greater
democracy and freedom around the world. Scholarly research and writing
examines the historical significance, special character, and high aspirations
of philanthropic foundations to influence the American dialogue. A restless
pursuit of different viewpoints and a healthy suspicion toward the status quo
bring research and reason to the public discourse. Research areas may include
economics, political science, and history.
Candidate qualifications: Students whose majors require
extraordinary research and writing projects in history, policy, law, government
and economics are encouraged to apply.
RESEARCH & POLICY
The Foundation aims to elevate the importance that both academic researchers
and policy makers give to the study of entrepreneurship, placing
entrepreneurship as a field of research in the academic mainstream. To
accomplish this, we are working with grantees and others to pursue new
knowledge in key subject areas critical to better understanding and legitimizing
entrepreneurship.
Candidate qualifications: We seek interns with a focus in economics, law,
public policy or other social sciences.
To Apply: Interested applicants are asked to submit qualifications, including a
cover letter and resume via the online submission process at
www.kauffman.org/internships. Only applications submitted online will be
considered.

diverse pool of candidates is welcomed and encouraged.
All internship applications must be received by March 15, 2009.
