Halal Employment & The American Dream
Department of Sanat-O-Tijarat (Career Development)

The American Dream: economic success to fulfill our material satisfactions and provide a better future for our children. People from all around the world migrate to the United States to have a piece of the American Dream. The rules of the game here are simple: work hard and reap the benefits.
As Ahmadi Muslims, we must keep in mind that while attaining the American Dream, we must not only work hard, but also make sure our line of employment is within the rules of Islam. Working in businesses that deal, for example, with alcohol and pork, should be avoided.

Alcohol, which is considered to be the cause of all vices, has devastating effects that are witnessed on a daily basis. For example, many crimes are committed by those who are intoxicated by alcohol, including incest and rape and domestic violence. In the Quran, Allah says: alcohol.jpg
O ye who believe! Intoxicants and games of chance and idols and divining arrows are only an abomination of Satan's handiwork. So shun each one of them that you may prosper. Satan desires only to create enmity and hatred among you by means of intoxicants and games of chance, and to keep you back from the remembrance of Alla h and from Prayer. But will  you keep back? (5:91-92).

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) has said that alcohol is "The mother of all evils." Ultimately, alcohol leads to one's loss of religious faith.

Pork is a known source of trichinosis-also known as trichina worm-that can lead to serious neurological damage and even death. The prohibition of consuming pork is mentioned four times in the Quran. In Chapter five, verse four, it mentions that "Forbidden to you is the flesh of an animal which dies of itself, and blood and the flesh of swine;"
The Promised Messiah(on Whom be Peace) also mentions the uncleanly and shameless behavior of pig and says "...the reason for the prohibition of its flesh is obvious, as by the law of nature its flesh would have a foul effect on the body, and the soul of one who eats it..."

It may be a difficult transition to switch employment if you are working with alcohol and/or pork products. To help find employment that is Islamic and to help ease the transition, the MKA Sanat-O-Tijarat (Career Development) Department is here to help. This department not only has a Job Center with posted job openings all over the United States, but also maintains the Ahmadiyya Yellow Pages that serves as a way to network and find Ahmadis who are in places of employment where you desire to work (you can also register yourself here). Additionally, the department has a Mentor-Protégé Program that will pair up newly-employed Ahmadis (or students) with experienced ones who can guide you and assist with the transition to a new place of employment. Lastly, the Sanat-O-Tijarat (Jobs and Career Development) Department hosts career and leadership seminars to help you explore new careers, learn technical skills, and become leaders.
