Harris Qureshi, Silicon Valley Majlis

This month's Shining Star is Harris Qureshi, from Silicon Valley Majlis.  Harris recently graduated from the University of California in May, 2007 with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science and a minor in Public Policy. Harris was always interested in political issues and how policies are made. What especially motivated Harris to pursue a career in Political Science were the devastating events of September 11th; he realized just how influential the U.S. relationship with the rest of the world was.

While living in Silicon Valley and being a member of the Model United Nations in High School organization, Harris became highly interested in getting an education from UC Berkeley. His first step in this journey was to attend De Anza College where Harris became deeply involved in campus affairs. He became part of the Student Senate and was voted Vice-President of Student Services. As VP, Harris was in charge of allocating funds overseeing various departments such as tutoring, health services, transfer students, etc. After the beginning of the Iraq War, Harris joined a group called Students for Justice, which called for social actions, justice, and change.  He soon realized that making a difference on a large scale was much harder than he thought.

Afterwards, Harris successfully transferred to UC Berkeley. Here, he worked as a campus coordinator for an organization called Democracy Matters, making him in charge of a Proposition 89 campaign. Through this campaign, he organized a group for promoting the public financing of elections for all statewide offices Harris spent one semester pursuing his interest in foreign affairs by interning at the South Asia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. His work here led him to publish a foreign policy article titled "Pakistan and Mussharaf: Surrounded by Uncertainty". His research also led him to concurrently write an extensive research paper.

Harris is currently relocating to Washington D.C. in hopes of attaining a foreign policy analyst position. In this age of globalization, Harris believes that we as Americans do not realize that we have to engage the world as one of our responsibilities. "The influence of money has corrupted leaders,” he says. “ Money is only a material that we can rely on for so long to protect us from the realities of the changing world…engaging other countries and working together to address issues can prove to be fruitful for more than one party". It is Harris’ hope that countries will begin to make policies and choose leaders that have the flexibility and sense of responsibility to respond to the changing world.
