2008 April - Ayaz Khan

Ayaz Khan, Detroit Majlis
To me, a star is someone who overcomes the hardships in life to reach their ultimate goal.   I consider Ayaz Khan a Shining Star in many ways.  In 6th grade, he was diagnosed with Osgood-schlatters disease, which is a condition caused by the bone rubbing against the tendon, causing extreme pain. Thus, it made it very difficult for him to play sports, especially football.

Therefore, in 6th grade, he became the manager for the football team at his school, in order to learn more about the sport.  The next year, the disease began to go away, and he was able to join the football team.  He played Offensive and Defensive line, but was unable to become a starter due to his lack of experience.  He was inclined to quit before the season was over, but his older brothers never gave up on him.  Therefore, after the season was over, he worked hard with his older brothers in order to become bigger, faster, and stronger.  He worked out and played football with some friends, many of whom were much bigger than him.  This allowed Ayaz to gain much speed and strength.  Once the season started again in 8th grade, Ayaz tried out for the team again.  He started as a Linebacker and on the Offensive line.  Also, due to his tremendous increase in skill and strength, he was also put on all the special teams.  He was soon declared one of the best defensive players on his team, and in 2 out of his 6 games, he was awarded the Big Stick Award, the award given to the best hitter in the game.  After the season was over, he was awarded the Black and Blue Award, which declared him the best hitter throughout the whole season.  This inspired him to continue on with his training, and throughout the next year, he worked out with his brothers again.  Upon entering High School, he once again tried out for the football team.  He was instantly put on the starting lineup for both Defensive Linebacker, and Offensive Guard.  Also, he gained many positions on the Special Teams.  Throughout the season, he kept all his positions, and once again became the best defensive player on his team.  He carried his team to an undefeated season, and at the end of the season, he was 1 of 4 players to receive an award from the school, the Iron Man award, given to the toughest player on the team.  Not only has Ayaz overcome many challenges in Football, but he has also been very active in the Jama’at.  He would miss every Friday practice in order to attend Juma Prayers.  Most players lose their positions if they miss practice, but by the grace of Allah, his prayers allowed him to not only keep his positions, but become much better at the sport as well.  Currently he is the General Secretary for the Atfal, and he participates in many Jama’at activities as well, such as Adopt-the-Highway and other Waqr-e-Amal.
