Shining Star of the Month - May 2009__________________________________________________________________________________________
Manzurul A. Sikder, M.D . was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh to 3rd generation Ahmadi family and moved to New York at age of 12. Manzur Graduated as the Valedictorian of class at Eastern District High School in Brooklyn , NY with a cumulative average of 97.6% and won numerous awards. Manzur received Bachelors degree in Biochemistry from New York university and won Governor's Committee on Scholastic Achievements award, and Margart Sokol Award for excellence in chemistry.
He spent 2 years at Columbia University doing research related to rapid transcranial magnetic stimulation (RTMS). The pioneering work done at Columbia's Dept of Biological Psychiatry has made RTMS emerge as a major modality of treatment of depression since then. He then attended St. George's University School of Medicine. Here he graduated in top 5% of class with cumulative GPA of 3.91.
He completed 3-year residency in Internal Medicine at University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). He won several Intern of the Month and Resident of the Month awards. He was voted "Most Humanistic Resident", and "Most Scholarly Resident" – both in 2006 – by peers and faculty. He was chief resident, Internal Medicine, UMDNJ. He is also a Board certified physician in Medicine. He is currently completing fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at University of Rochester.
Manzur has not just achieved academic excellence but his knowledge of holy Quran is enviable. He recites Holy Quran with heartfelt humility and love. His deep love and dedication for Jamaat and willingness to serve is what truly makes him shining star.
Manzur currently is serving as Qaid, Rochester Majlis and Naib Regional Qaid North-East Region. Manzur has held several positions in past which include, Sec Publications, NY Jamaat; Nazim Tabligh North-East Region; Nazim Tabligh NY Majlis; Editor of Baitul Zafar Envoy.Manzur truly is shining star.
Manzur also has authored several publications including:
- 4 peer reviewed scientific papers. 3 within the past year.. Latest one in Leukemia & Lymphoma .
- Text-book chapter on "Metastatic Lung Cancer" to be published in 2009
- 9 research posters and abstracts presented at national meetings of American Society of Hemaology (ASH), and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
- 6 posters at American College of Physicians meetings.
- 3 articles on Review of Religions on Islamic teachings related to health and medicine.
- 2 articles on Journal of Ahmadiyya Medical Association (JAMMA).
- weekly Islamic column on a NY-based newspaper, Africa Abroad .
Research interests:
- Role of radiation therapy in treatment of early-stage diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. In a recent paper we argued that involved field radiation in this patient population may truncate the need for extended chemotherapy.
- Management of patients with lymphoma who fail autologous stem cell transplantation. Based on our experience at University of Rochester , we propose an algorithm for treatment of these patients with relapsed lymphoma following bone marrow transplant.
