October 2009 - Hamid Ahmad
Detroit, Great Lakes
In my mind, a Shining Star is one who is committed to and sacrifices for the sake of the Jama’at of the Promised Messiah. Throughout the years, Hamid Ahmad has proven himself to be invaluable to the Jama’at by serving.
He served as Nazim Sehat-e-Jismanee and Nazim Taleem in the local Khuddam Amila. He served as Naib Waqf-e-Jadid in the Detroit Jama’at Amila. He also volunteered on the Khilafat team when Hazooraba was visiting the US. Whenever the need arises, whether it is for the cleanup of the Mosque, Adopt-a-Highway program, or even a friendly volleyball game at the Masjid, Hamid always makes room in his schedule to attend these activities.
Hamid spent most of his childhood in Pakistan, graduating from the Beaconhouse School System in Islamabad. He then moved with his family to the United States, and attended Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan, where he spent his time concentrating on studies as well as extracurricular activities. Hamid volunteered through his school to build and donate computers for the underprivileged. He enjoyed Shakespearean literature, Anthropology and was on the Dean’s list throughout his enrollment. He then transferred to Michigan State University, where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. For his senior design project, he programmed a pocket PC to interface with an exercise bike, which retrieved and converted the data on the exercise machine’s module to audio, to allow access for the visually impaired. For this project, he received the Professor’s Choice Award for Outstanding Team Performance, which was the first award of its kind in the history of Michigan State University’s College of Engineering.
Upon graduation, Hamid started working for Immersion Graphics Inc. as an Audio/ Video Systems Engineer, where he designed and programmed touch panels and control systems for controlling complex audio/video systems. He also learned how to run the cables for these audio/video systems. At this time, the Detroit Jama’at was in the process of building their new masjid (Masjid Mahmood) and there was an urgent need to install the A/V systems throughout the mosque. Over the course of several weeks, Hamid volunteered to use his skills to help coordinate and implement the installation of a highly advanced A/V system in the Mosque, which is currently being used.
Allah then blessed Hamid with another employment opportunity, where he became an employee of the EMC Corporation (a Global IT company), as an Implementation Delivery Engineer. His job description includes configuring and dealing with high end storage information systems. This allows him to apply his passion for technical innovation and traveling as he gets various opportunities to travel on company business. However, he always makes sure he does his best to serve the Jama’at, and whenever his help is needed, he is always eager to respond and participate in Khuddam activities. Anyone who has met Hamid knows that he will always go out of his way to help others, and his dedication to the Jama’at is what truly makes him a shining star.
