2011 July - Waqas Nazir Malik

“Muslims living in America should not only be grateful to all it has to offer but also present to America the beauties of Islam.” These words by respected brother Waqas Nazir Malik, are not only a guidance to Muslim youth, but are also exemplified by brother Waqas.

Although born in an Ahmadi family, brother Waqas Malik was raised among Sunni Muslims, and was born in the United Arab Emirates. He spent most of his childhood there. Brother Waqas Malik’s family hails from Dulmail, a small village in the Punjab in Pakistan. He moved to Pakistan when he was 12 years old, where he furthered his studies. His early curriculum also included Islamic Studies, which provided an early Islamic framework for a young Muslim.

Although Brother Waqas was immersed in Sunni Islam, he kept a very open mind. “I was taught all the teaching of a Sunni Muslim in school and grew up with those teachings. I attended Jumma (Friday) prayer at a local Sunni mosque. All my friends were Sunni” Says Brother Waqas. When he lived in Pakistan, it became very easy to not question the status quo. But when he moved to America as a student, he was able to engage in various perspectives. Here, he came across the Promised Messiah’s (as) Philosophy of the Teaching of Islam. Along with the beautiful gems of the Promised Messiah’s (as) writings, Brothers Waqas’s conversations with Ahmadi Muslims further quenched his thirst for religious knowledge. The rationality, as well as peacefulness, of Ahmadi Muslims shines bright. One such discussion was about the Dajjal (the anti-Christ). Brother Waqas was taught of the Dajjal as being a cycloptic beast, shackled on a remote island. Yet the reasoning on Ahmadiyyat in regards to the Dajjal contained much more reason and insight. The rational superiority of Ahmadiyyat’s teachings made it easy for brother Waqas to understand and accept them.

Brother Waqas has been able to fulfill many Jamaat responsibilities, and currently he is Naib Sadr Seattle Jamaat, Tabligh Secretary Seattle Jamaat, Wassaya Secretary Seattle Jamaat, National Naib Mohtamim Atfal, General Secretary Mohasiba Committee MKA USA. He was also a Qaid for Seattle Majlis for many years.

“The face of Islam has been blurred by the so-called Muslim leaders. It is the duty of the Muslim Americans to show through practice that Islam is a peaceful religion.” Says Brother Waqas. These message could not ring more truer than today. It’s necessary for us to not only spread Islam’s beautiful teachings through Muslim for Peace, but to also engage in intellectual discussions with our fellow Americans. This rationality is not only seen through our discussions, but also by our actions. As Muslim Americans, its our duty to spread Islam’s true peacefulness and beauty; in our blessed home of America, where we are given freedom of intellectual discourse. May Allah enable us to do so, Ameen.
