March 2011 - Umar Razzaq
Hartford, Connecticut (Northeast Region)
Umar Razzaq is the eldest of three siblings all of whom were born and raised in Connecticut. His father, Zaffar Razzaq, served as Qaid in CT and has been serving as Finance Secretary for the Connecticut Jama’at for over a decade. Umar serves his local Majlis as Nazim Maal (Finance). He currently attends the University of Connecticut (UConn) as a sophomore majoring in the newly emerged discipline of Biomedical Engineering where he maintains a flawless GPA.
He is also part of Jama'at blessed Wasiyyat (Will) system. Recently, Umar was selected by UConn’s chapter of Unite For Sight, a global health delivery organization, from a strong pool of candidates for a two week long humanitarian project abroad in the Global Impact Corps. He fundraised $2000 and 300 eye glasses for the worldwide volunteers (physicians, nurses, students) and is currently serving in Ghana where he participates daily with local ophthalmologists, local optometrists, and local ophthalmic nurses to eliminate patient barriers to care and to facilitate comprehensive eye care for patients living in extreme poverty. Umar is a member of the Global Impact Fellows, a body of volunteers actively participating in Unite For Sight’s international programs. Umar is a family oriented Khadim, quiet and humble in nature, who strives diligently in his educational pursuits. It is rare to see Umar not immersed in his books as his studies are his passion. When he's not in class, Umar volunteers as a research assistant in the cardiology department at UConn. May Allah continue to bless him with more opportunities to serve the Jama'at and humanity, Insha Allah.
