Valentines Day - FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is our position on Valentine’s Day?
Mingling with opposite gender and premarital relationship is not allowed in Islam. The whole tradition of Valentine’s day revolves around the practice of giving gifts to such relationships which is totally unislamic. (see second condition of Bai’at (see second condition of Bai’at http://www.alislam.org/introduction/conditions.pdf )

What are some specific ills of this tradition?
Valentine’s day is celebrated primarily by the couples (married and unmarried) as a symbol of love. It is seen mostly among girlfriend and boyfriend relationships which fundamentally contradict with the Islamic institution of marriage. For more details on this see Islam system of Marriage.

Is it OK to give Valentine day gifts to family members?
Giving gifts to your loved ones (wives, parents, children, relatives and friends) in general is a commendable practice encouraged by the Holy Prophet of Islam; however giving a Valentine gift celebrating the occasion is a totally different thing and in not an Islamic tradition.

How can I best explain my 6 year old why he/she cannot participate in the Valentine's day customs like his/her friends at school?
This is a deeper question that deals with the responsibility of parents. Right from the childhood, parents should inculcate religious love and devotion in their children. Sooner this counseling start better it is for the long run. Parents should explain to their children that this is an unislamic tradition and we do not participate in it.

Should I accept Valentine's day gifts from someone at school or work?
The bold answer is NO. Being an Ahmadi Muslim we should show the courage to stand by our religious principles and also explain it to others in a polite way when put into such situations.
