MKA Blood Drive: Jan 24, 2010 - Masjid Mahmood Detroit, Great Lakes
On Sunday, January 24th, 2010, MKA Detroit held its Second Bi-Annual Blood Drive at Masjid Mahmood in cooperation with the American Red Cross. Due to the enormous success of our first blood drive in July, the American Red Cross was eager for us to hold another drive, especially at a time of critically low blood supplies across the nation.
Preparations started several months ago with Nazim Khidmat-e-Khalq, Adeel Ahmed sahib, contacting the Red Cross to start the initial process. After the approval of Sadr Jama’at and the Amila, a date of the blood drive was chosen. Flyers were made and distributed to members of the Jamaat via email, and several non-Jama’at members were invited as well. Efforts were made to get people to sign up for specific time slots, and we were able to fill all the required time slots with potential donors. The morning of the blood drive, many Khuddam showed up to help with setting up the equipment and making sure everything ran smoothly.
This year, MKA USA has stressed the importance of donating blood, and set a target to donate 2000 bags of blood throughout the country. The Detroit Chapter was given the goal of getting 59 members to donate this year. This being our first blood drive of the year, by the Grace of Allah, we were able to collect 29 bags; 19 from males and 9 from females, which can help save 84 lives. 39 people signed in to donate, 6 of whom were deferred due to low iron, blood pressure or travel. From the donors, 8 of them were first time donors. Insha’Allah, next year we will be able to get more non-member donors as well, and more effort will be put into involving the surrounding community.
