Be the top fundraiser for the walk and get a free round trip ticket to London. This will be a perfect opportunity to be allowed a meeting with Hazur (aba) at the request of his holiness. This past of month of Ramadan has taught all of us how important it is to sacrifice for the sake of Allah and for others. The mission for this walk is to serve humanity and we must sacrifice our time to make this a success. Remember this is one of the directives that our beloved Hazur (aba) has asked of us to do.

HUMANITY BANNER 2

Letter to MKA USA Youth from Whyhunger.org Staff

August 17, 2012

Wow, Ramadan has ended! Very hearty congratulations to those who have fasted through the long
humid summer days. The long hours you waited for Iftar while at school, work or home has come to
a close and a grand feast is welcomed with Eid. Truth be told, many of us are fortunate to only know
the direct physical effects of hunger only one month a year. But, for many Americans hunger is an
everyday reality. Did you know that here in the United States of America there are 50 million
Americans, including 17 million children that don’t know where there next meal will come from?
Each year, 37 million Americans rely on emergency food assistance from soup kitchens, food pantries
and food banks to feed for themselves and their families. That includes nearly 14 million children and
3 million seniors! Globally, there are 1.02 billion people who are hungry.
After reading this you’re probably asking yourself, “Why is there hunger in a world that can feasibly
feed itself?” We did too. WhyHunger is a nonprofit that envisions a world without hunger or
poverty. We are a leader in building the movement to end hunger and poverty by connecting people
to nutritious, affordable food and by supporting grassroots solutions that inspire self-reliance and
community empowerment. We believe that the root cause of hunger is poverty, and the root cause
of poverty is powerlessness. So we work to combat these root causes, shifting power back to
communities, working from the ground up - to eliminate poverty and end hunger.
Through the National Hunger Hotline, 1-866-3-HUNGRY, WhyHunger’s committed staff and
volunteers helped more than 18,900 hungry Americans to find emergency food in their
neighborhood and get connected to federal nutrition programs, especially SNAP (Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants and Children Program). During the summer
months, when childhood hunger in the U.S. peaks, WhyHunger helps the USDA feed 2.2 million
children. To combat childhood hunger, we registered 18,000 community based locations to our
online database of USDA Summer Food Service Program sites and referred more than 3,400 lowincome
families to a site in their community to receive free, nutritious meals this past summer. Our
“Imagine There’s No Hunger” Campaign, through on-going partnership with Hard Rock International
and Yoko Ono Lennon, has raised $4.5 million to help grassroots organizations in 15 countries grow
food to provide over 5.5 million nutritious meals. And to ensure a future without hunger, Imagine
There’s No Hunger supports sustainable agriculture programs and training for children and their
families at 26 organizations globally.
At WhyHunger we work as connectors, movement builders. We know the end of hunger and poverty
is just not an imagination; it can be a reality too. So what can you do? Well, we want you to be
connectors as well. Join the Walk for Humanity on September 29th/30th in your participating city,
reach out and volunteer your free time to learn about community organizations in your area that are
feeding the hungry and working towards eradicating poverty. And finally raise awareness, be a
movement builder yourself and inspire your family, friends and your community to get involved.
Ramadan is month of guidance, gratitude, and giving. Let’s not only attribute these qualities only to
one month a year, but the whole year. We need more hunger-heroes; are you up for the task?

Ramadan Kareem and Eid Mubarak!
Sincerely,
WhyHunger Staff
